Noon Sakinah (a still, unvowelled Noon: \u0646) and Tanween (the double-vowel endings: \u064b \u064d \u064c) are two of the very first Tajweed topics beginners encounter, mostly because they appear constantly in nearly every page of the Quran. Here’s a plain-language walkthrough of the four rules that govern them.<\/p>\n

Why These Two Rules Are Grouped Together<\/h2>\n

Noon Sakinah and Tanween are treated identically in Tajweed because they produce the same sound \u2014 a plain “n” \u2014 and follow the exact same four rules depending on which letter comes right after them. Once you learn the rule for Noon Sakinah, you already know the rule for Tanween in the same situation.<\/p>\n

1. Izhar (Clear Pronunciation) \u2014 \u0625\u0638\u0647\u0627\u0631<\/h2>\n

When the Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by one of the throat letters (\u0621 \u0647 \u0639 \u062d \u063a \u062e), it’s pronounced clearly and fully, with no change or blending \u2014 this is the “default,” most straightforward case.<\/p>\n

2. Idgham (Merging) \u2014 \u0625\u062f\u063a\u0627\u0645<\/h2>\n

When followed by one of six specific letters (\u064a \u0631 \u0645 \u0644 \u0648 \u0646), the Noon sound merges into the next letter rather than being pronounced separately. Idgham itself splits into two types \u2014 with and without a nasal sound (Ghunnah) \u2014 depending on which of the six letters follows.<\/p>\n

3. Iqlab (Conversion) \u2014 \u0625\u0642\u0644\u0627\u0628<\/h2>\n

When followed specifically by the letter Ba (\u0628), the Noon sound converts into a Meem sound, pronounced with a light nasal quality. This is the rarest of the four rules but very distinctive once you learn to recognize it \u2014 you’ll often see a small meem symbol written above the Noon in a properly marked Mushaf as a visual cue.<\/p>\n

4. Ikhfa (Concealment) \u2014 \u0625\u062e\u0641\u0627\u0621<\/h2>\n

For the remaining 15 letters not covered by the three rules above, the Noon is neither fully pronounced (as in Izhar) nor merged away (as in Idgham) \u2014 it’s partially concealed, pronounced with a light nasal sound that sits between the two. This is usually the hardest of the four rules for beginners to get consistently right, since it requires a sound that isn’t quite either extreme.<\/p>\n
